The Strathmore Reds AA bantam team just finished playing in the Tier 2 provincials this past weekend in Calgary. They went into provincials with six wins and 12 losses, but the team started at zero again when they started provincials.
“We did a lot better than I thought we would do. I thought we (were) playing over our heads. I didn’t expect us to do that well,” said coach Jim Crooks.
“I thought the boys played quite well for the weekend. They put it together for a couple of games. We couldn’t get our hitting going in the last game and that kind of cost us, but other than that it was a good weekend.”
The weekend began with a win 17-0 against North Peace. The second game was against Fort Saskatchewan. Crooks said they were tied 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh when one of the kids got a walk off home run. On Sunday they played in semi-final and lost 14-3.
The season has also been an up-and-down kind of year.
“We had a real terrible start, a real good middle and a terrible ending,” said Crooks.
He said the way that the team was tiered is what brought on the up and down season. Crooks said at first the team was tiered too high, then too low, and then higher then he would have liked.
