With the summer almost over and school already started, one student is looking to make a difference. At the beginning of summer 10-year-old Tanya Shpyth brainstormed with some friends and came up with an idea of how to raise money to help her school in light of the budget cuts.
“Me and my friends were just sitting around talking one day at recess and we thought because of budget cutbacks we might just start a Kool-Aid stand and we had all these other cool, weird ideas that can help raise money for our school,” said Tanya on June 3.
All of the public school divisions have suffered huge cutbacks and students became aware of the problems. Shpyth goes to Brentwood Elementary School and she decided to set up a Kool-Aid stand for the summer. She was out six to seven times throughout the summer.
“I was out a lot around the first part of the summer and since I’ve gone camping I haven’t had the time and the weather has been yucky,” said Shpyth.
Her younger brother Travis and her older sister Taylor both helped Tanya, relieving her for breaks. Tanya said her friend Brandon has even helped her out with the stand.
“I thought it was pretty awesome, everybody was so wonderful. It was just a great experience for her to try,” said Tammy, Tanya’s mom.
Tanya didn’t raise as much as she had hoped to, but she still raised enough to make a difference. Some people stopped by their house and dropped off a bag of coins as a donation, said Tammy. Tanya raised $41.36 in donations and raised $42.21 through the Kool-Aid stand. Her parents will be matching the amount raised through the stand.
