Spend a day in a maze

For five years the Country Farmhouse just off of highway 1 near Cluny has been the place to stop if you want that at home feel without being home. The farmhouse offers a gift shop, hair salon and home cooking. The other feature the farmhouse has to offer to draw people in is the Cluny Corn Maze. 

This is the third year for the corn maze and Dianne Brown, owner of the Country Farmhouse, designs the maze she wants and sends it to a guy in the States. 

“I get him to come in and cut it because I just don’t have the time,” said Brown. Instead of harvesting the corn once the maze closes the cows are turned loose onto it. Most people wouldn’t think to build a maze, but for Brown it was just an added enhancement to her business and great for the kids. 

“I just thought it would fun for the kids in the area. There’s not a lot for the kids to do out here,” said Brown.  

People are given a map and questions before entering the maze and when they get to the first post the answer to the question directs people to the next post. 

“What I did this year, is I’ve always got the questions from down in the States but I thought no I want to do it pertaining to the area, so I’ve made up my own questions,” said Brown. 

Brown does Flashlight Fridays, where people bring a flashlight and go through the corn maze in the dark. Brown said she waits until later in the year because it kind of wrecks the corn.  

The maze has been open since the beginning of August. Brown said last year due to the muddy weather she closed it in mid October.  

“I always warn them. I had a group go out in November in the snow and everything, and they were plum happy,” said Brown.  Last year before closing the maze for the year Brown set up a Halloween haunt. It was a lot of work but something she wants to do again this year, though she would like to enlist the help of a youth group or something of the sort from one of the surrounding communities.  The corn maze can easily keep people entertained for hours and if you exit the maze and are famished, the farmhouse is right there.
