The Strathmore High School, SHS, Spartans volleyball team hosted their annual tournament this past weekend. Nov. 5 and 6 saw the girls competing at the SHS gym, while boys teams were at Crowther Memorial Junior High. This year Strathmore did not have a boy’s team competing in the tournament. There were 10 girls’ teams and eight boys’ teams filling the two gyms.
“The girls struggled in pool play on Friday, losing in three games, to both Acme and Senator Gershaw,” said coach Lou Bleier.
On Saturday the team seemed to find their comfort zone and spent the day playing a good game of volleyball. They defeated both Crescent Heights and Drumheller, in two games each.
The quarterfinal saw the Spartans face off against Oyen, who they beat two straight, before heading into the semi-finals to play against Brooks.
“It was a hard fought battle with a tough zone opponent, with some great hits, timely digs, roof blocks, and tough serving,” said Bleier.
Game three saw Brooks beat the Spartans 15-13. Senator Gershaw battled Brooks in the finals where they took the title of tournament winner.
Foothills Composite won the boys portion of the tournament, beating out Crescent Heights from Medicine Hat. The Spartans were back in league action on Nov. 10, hosting Highwood and Strathcona Tweedsmuir at 5:30 p.m. Results were not available at press time.
