The PeeWee Spartans football team just finished its second year. The team spent the season surprising their coaches and themselves when they managed to pull off win after win, ending regular league play at 5-3, which included two playoff wins.
“They played their hearts out right to the very end and I’m very proud of them, everybody’s proud of them,” said coach Doug Klauck.
The team put in a lot of hard work and showed sheer determination this past season to earn their spot at the provincials held in Edmonton on Nov. 20. The team played at the University of Alberta, and Klauck said a lot of his boys were impressed by the size of the stadium and kept looking around in awe. The team wasn’t able to hold on to its winning streak and was defeated by the Spruce Grove Cougars.
“It was just a matter of they executed better than we did, and that was the bottom line,” said Klauck.
“This is only the second year for our program, and to go that far into the playoffs and to be the second best team in Tier 4, that’s a heck of an accomplishment for them.”
Klauck said Spruce Grove was just a little better prepared for the game, plus they had the advantage of playing on home turf and being used to playing at a large stadium.
Next year Klauck said he will lose about half of his boys to the Bantam team, and it will be somewhat like starting all over again with next years team.
“We have our running back and our quarterback coming back next year so we’re not in too bad of shape,” said Klauck.
The only event the team has left is the annual banquet, which will be held in January.
