The first of three provincial tier tournaments took place in Kinsmen Park over the weekend. Seven teams came out to play with games going all day Saturday and Sunday.
The teams play each other and as they win or lose they are placed with other teams at their level in order to keep things evenly matched.
“It was good, the ball teams were pretty evenly matched,” said Reds coach Keith Hempel of the weekend’s games.
By the time the year is over, each team will be playing their competitive match. The first game for the
Strathmore Reds was at 9 a.m. Saturday against the Innisfail Indians. The Reds lost their first game of the weekend 12-1.
“Saturday morning’s game they made some errors, they weren’t quite awake yet, but after some wind sprints and a run around the lake they played really well in the second game,” said Hempel.
In the second game of the day the Reds faced off against Rocky Sundevils from Rocky Mountain House, beating them 10-9 in an extra inning.
Sunday didn’t look good for the team; they had only one game lined up for the day at 4 p.m. They played against the Lacombe Dodgers, and the Dodgers won 6-3. The Reds are set to play again June 12-13. It is not yet determined where the games will be held.
