For the past seven years the senior girls volleyball team from Standard School has won their zone finals. This year makes eight for them. The team was in Rosemary to compete this year.
“This is actually our eighth consecutive zone banner, so we have won it for the last eight years. And we’re actually going for our eighth provincial championship too, so we’re hoping that we can keep it going, so that’s very exciting for us,” said coach Susan Moncks.
Standard school is considered a 1A team and are categorized by the size of the school which is why Standard was at a different area for their zones then Strathmore was.
The Standard volleyball team doesn’t have a league but instead they play in regionals. There is an east region and a west region. Standard is a part of the west region and Bassano is a part of the east region. The top four teams from each region advance on to zones.
“Bassano and Trochu ended up playing in the bronze medal match and Trochu won that and then Acme and ourselves were in the final and we came out on top in that one,” said Moncks of the final games over the weekend.
Moncks said it was too bad for Acme that they are unable to take part this year, as they are such a strong team. The provincials will take place on Nov. 25.
The boys team also took part in their zone playoffs, with their games being held in Bassano. They didn’t do quite as well as the girls had and unfortunately didn’t make it into the finals.  Moncks said the boys have also done well this season but that they were up against some tough teams at zones.
