The Strathmore High School, SHS, junior girls volleyball team had a home game on Oct. 26. It was a tough start for the girls who were up against the Oilfields for the first match, which they lost 15–25.
“The second game was a little better they started to move and scrounged a second set victory by a score of 25-22,” said coach Jerry Flaws.
“The third game was the best game of the night, they moved well and never gave up on a play.”
The team was feeling a little down in spirits by the time they went into the third game of the night. That all changed when Halle Doore dove out of bounds, saving the ball. The save by Doore gave the girls the much needed spark they had been lacking, and they fought even harder to give it their all. The Spartans claimed victory in the third game, winning 15-9.
For their second match they played against Highwood High, from High River. The Spartans weren’t able to keep a winning streak going and lost in two straight matches.
“With the victory against Oilfield they climbed up one spot in the rankings securing a playoff berth,” said Flaws.
On the weekend the girls had a chance to head to Canmore to take part in the Mountain Classic. It was a weekend of good volleyball and great scenery for the girls. They played Foothills Comp on Friday night and where they lost in two straight games.
“The girls played some amazing volleyball on Saturday defeating Bearspaw Christian, Archbishop Oscar Romero, and Olds before dropping a match to the host team Canmore,” said Flaws. “The girls played really well and came together as a cohesive unit during the tournament.”
The team lost the playoffs to Holy Trinity Academy, from Okotoks. The next home games for the girls will be Nov. 19 and 20 when they host the South Central JV Girls Championship.
