A&W restaurants all over the country held their second national Cruise for a Cause on August 26. The cause they were cruising for is the MS Society of Canada.
“A&W Corporate Canada did it a couple years ago, just a trial, out in the east and it was a huge success so then last year all of the A&W’s in Canada went nationally,” said Tracey Peters ,an organizer of the event.
Events started at noon here in Strathmore, and though the high winds and chill in the air kept many people out of the dunk tank, it didn’t stop them from coming in for the other activities. There was also a mini show and shine, which Chris Scarlet won with her classic car.
There were kids games, a silent auction, 50/50 ticket sales and other fun events like the Baby Burger eating contest. At 7 p.m., for a fee of $5, people could enter into the contest. Contestants had 12 minutes to eat as many baby burgers as they possibly could. The winner was Michael Cox who at 15 of them.
Last year the store’s goal was to raise $1,500 and they hit the mark, so this year the goal was $3,500.
“They started making a little challenge inside on who can sell the most car tags and if we do hit our total on money raised our manager, Will, will shave his head with A&W in it and dye it orange,” said Peters.
“Anything that we brought in, raise, anything that we asked money for all goes to MS. We are not benefitting at all from this,” said Peters.
Every time people tweeted or RSVP to the Facebook events A&W donated .50 cents to the cause. Also $1 from every Teen Burger or Double Teen Burger was donated to MS. Strathmore A&W managed to raise just over $3,100. Even though they were short of their goal Will Whatley left for a little before noon on the 26 and came back with his hair orange, and shaved head.
