Holy Cross Collegiate, HCC, had four teams play in volleyball zones on Nov. 21 and 20. There were boy and girls junior and senior high teams. The junior teams were in a 3J class, and the girls brought home fourth place, while the boys came home with third.
“Overall it was a very good year, I think we made a lot of progress. Eventually we want to be able to win those zone banners,” said Michael Annicchiarico, athletic director for HCC.
Annicchiarico wasn’t surprised with how the junior teams did. He said he thought they were going to have a solid year but that any time a team wins zones, they need to have a very good team and HCC just fell a little short.
The senior boys team, coached by John Reinhart had a bit of a struggle at the start of their weekend playing zones. Due to injuries, illness and other things, the team was down to six players, the minimum requirement to play.
“It was kind of iron man volleyball. We had a little bit of trouble adapting on the Friday, it was just a little different for them so we didn’t play as well on Friday but Saturday morning they were used to things and they played quite well,” said Reinhart.
The senior boys just barely lost to the second rank team, losing by a couple of points. They needed a win to go to playoffs.  Reinhart would have liked to see them make it into the playoffs this year because it was their first year playing at a 2A level.
“We’ve improved from last year, so if we improve again next year…that’s what you always hope for, continued improvement,” said Reinhart.
There will be five returning players next year who were on this year’s team. The senior girls team was in Strathcona Tweedsmuir for their zones. They made it to the quarterfinals before they were taken out of the equation.
“They played their best of the season,” said coach Thomas Rochford.  They played against 10 teams and ended up placing fifth, said Rochford. All but four of his team will be returning next year.
