The gym was filled with cheering parents, friends and fellow classmates as the combined high school volleyball tournament took place at Holy Cross Collegiate Oct. 29 and 30. It was a senior high tournament, but due to a team dropping out from one of the other schools, the Grade 9 team had a chance to take part in the tournament and keep working on their skills.
The boys lost in the quarterfinals, in the third game, but the season isn’t quite over for them yet. They still have a few games of league play to go over the course of this next week and they may still have the opportunity to go to zones.
The school is a bit bigger this year, which places the teams into a new category. Last year they were playing as 1A and this year they have gone up to a 2A team. John Reinhart, coach for the boys team said often the teams are competing against players from 3A and 4A schools, which can be daunting but hasn’t stopped both teams from giving their all, every game.
“I think both teams are doing better, they’re qualifying higher, they’re winning more league games this year. I know the boys are definitely winning more often than they did last year,” said Reinhart.
Reinhart is still waiting to find out if the boys will need to go compete in the regional tournament in order to head off to zones. The girls team will be in Medicine Hat over the Nov. 6 weekend. They know they will have to take part in regional tournament first. The girls will have finished their league games after the trip to Medicine Hat, but the boys still have a few games to go.
“Hopefully we still have a fair bit of volleyball left,” said Reinhart. The girls ended the tournament on third place losing to Caroline in the semi-finals.
