Doing their part for the community

For the past few years, students at Holy Cross Collegiate have done a stocking stuffer campaign to gather items of need for the Community Crisis Society.
“The Crisis Shelter has a wish list that they are looking for, so every year we try to donate something to them,” said Carla Bisharat, teacher supervisor for the student council.
“Last year we did an actual stocking stuffer campaign where it was just bring in whatever, but this year they had more of a specific list of what they would like.”
The student council does two big fundraisers a year, with the fall one usually being for a local charity and the winter one for an international charity. They have no idea what they are going to do for the international fundraiser. It doesn’t necessarily mean it will be somewhere else in the world, just that it will be somewhere outside of the Strathmore community. There are about 15 students that are a part of the student council and they help Bisharat spearhead the campaign.
“At the start of the year we try to pick what our two charities for the year are going to be and so they were all good with having that again this year. It’s nice to keep things local,” said Bisharat.
The whole school gets involved in the fundraising campaign. Bisharat said the junior high kids are a little more keen to participate in the fundraising than the high school students.
“We’ve just been giving the list out to the parents and the kids and just trying to get whatever we can off that list for them.”
The staff has Casual Fridays every Friday, and at the beginning of the semester the staff pay $20 to be able to take part in Casual Fridays that semester. The money brought in from that was also be donated to the Crisis Society.
