County Assessment Board in Progress

Wheatland County is currently in the process of assembling an Assessment Appeal Board to hear matters regarding assessment appeals.
The Government of Alberta brought down new regulation in the Municipal Government Act and introduced the “Matters Relating to Assessment Complaints”.

“There’s always been assessment review boards, but they revamped them,” said Jennifer Deak, County Manager.
It is now required for governing entities to have board members trained by taking two days of law training and two days of assessment training to be able to sit on the assessment appeal board.

There will also be two different sections, a Local Assessment Review Board (LARB) and Composite Assessment Review Board (CARB).
The LARB will hear matters that relate to properties such as single dwellings and farmlands. The CARB will review matters relating to non-residential properties and those properties with four or more dwelling units.

“People who appeal their assessment this year will follow this new process,” said Deak. “They will be heard by those members.”
