Celebrating in their way

While many kids in and around Strathmore dressed up in their scariest costumes, some kids celebrated a different annual tradition. Trinity Lutheran Christian Academy, TLCA, celebrated Reformation Day with a carnival on Oct. 28. Reformation Day commemorates the reforming of the church by Martin Luther. Originally, according to principal Harold Warr, every one in the Christian world was Catholic, and there were some people who thought it should be different for a variety of reasons.
“Martin Luther, he thought something should change. He didn’t really want the church to split, he just wanted some things to change,” said Warr.
The change didn’t happen and different groups of people began different denominations. The first to develop was the Lutheran Church. Reformation Day and Halloween happen to fall on the same day, and in some Christian schools they don’t celebrate Halloween.
“We’re trying to provide a bit of an alternative here so that the kids can commemorate Reformation Day and what it meant for the development of the churches but at the same time, not deny them some of the fun that occurs at this time of the year,” said Warr.
Ordinarily there is a dress code at TLCA, but for the day students had an opportunity to dress casually. A rock-climbing wall was brought in for the kids, as well as a bouncy house, face painting and a variety of different fun filled activities.
