After coming out with one of their best performances of the season, the UFA Bisons played an average game.
As a result, the local triple-A midget team settled for a weekend split of their road games.
The Bisons defeated one of the top teams in the North Division, the Sherwood Park Kings, 4-3 on Nov. 20, before falling 5-3 to the CAC Gregg Distributors the following day.
“Saturday we played well and on Sunday we played just okay – and that was the difference,” said head coach Parry Shockey. “CAC has a good hockey club, but ultimately we didn’t play very well – if we would have played well at all, we’re probably in the mix for sure.”
The Bisons opened the scoring when Cody Brown converted a pass from Shayne Gwinner and affiliate player Parker Evans-Campbell. After a pair of CAC goals, Sam Johnson tallied his 10 marker of the season on the powerplay, when he took a pass from Kirby Ruzesky and Luke Philp.
CAC dominated on the score-sheet in the second period when they wired three consecutive goals. Torrin White scored his 11th goal of the season, to round out the scoring, when he fired home a third period marker from affiliate Tyler Haiste and Sam Johnson.
It was a different story on Saturday.
White scored once and added two assists to lead the way for the Bisons, while Philp tallied a goal and an assist. Conner Chartier and Simon Philp also scored for the herd.
“It was a very good game –probably the best game all year,” said Shockey. “Anyone who watched the game would have enjoyed it because it was physical – it was everything.
“It came down to – defensively in the third period – once we scored with 12 minutes left, they never had a sniff.”
The Bisons will now prepare to host the SSAC Athletics on Nov. 27, 5:30 p.m. at the Strathmore Family Centre, before welcoming the United Cycle the following day at 2 p.m.
