A major junior girls volleyball tournament for schools in Southern Alberta is going to be held at Holy Cross Collegiate in November.
For the first time ever, the school will be hosting the Junior A Girls 3J Zone volleyball tournament.  The tournament will held on the Remembrance Day weekend, Nov. 9 – 10.
“We’re really excited because it’s always fun to play at home (in front of our fans),” said Holy Cross Collegiate Junior A Girls volleyball team coach Jennifer Yersh.  “You never know where the zones will be, (so to play at our school this year is great).”
The 3J tournament is for girls volleyball teams that are in Grades 7 to 9.  Holy Cross Collegiate won the right to host the tournament after a bidding process involving all of the other athletic directors of the participating schools.  The tournament also marks the end of the volleyball season for junior high teams, with 18 teams competing in the tournament.
Because of the way the season ended up going for Holy Cross Collegiate’s own girls volleyball team, Yersh said that she hopes for the best result possible for her team.
“It’s been a season of ups and downs for us, so we just want the girls to work together and have fun (during the tournament),” she said.
Preparations are going well as the tournament approaches, Yersh said.
“It’s not the first time that we’ve hosted a tournament,” she said, adding that because of the school’s experience with hosting tournaments, they feel that they have the idea of what it takes to prepare and host the tournament, and make it a success.
The tournament will be the last set of games that will be played this season. It will also be the last time that the team will be together, and therefore it was important that the team has a great time during the tournament, she added.
